Voices from the Archives of the Sedgwick Museum: Women in Cambridge (online)

This International Archives Day, join our archivist Sandra Freshney, as we uncover the missing voices and stories of women from the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge.
You'll see photos from early fieldwork expeditions, when women were first encouraged to participate. You'll hear from Eleanor Sidgwick asking about mixed classes. You'll also hear from Cambridge geologist Mary Hughes about her journey to an international geological conference, and her encounter with Millicent Fawcett, leading campaigner for women's suffrage.
You’ll discover that women’s rights campaigner, Marie Stopes, was a botanist who used samples from the Sedgwick Museum. And we will learn about some of the Sedgwick Club, the Department of Earth Science's student society, including Gertie Elles, who was awarded an MBE for her work with the Red Cross during World War One.
There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the talk.
This lunchtime talk reflects the theme of this year's International Archive Day; that archives are accessible and becoming more connected and relevant to people everywhere.

Breaking New Ground: Celebrating Past, Present and Future Women Earth Scientists at the University of Cambridge
Join us in celebrating women Earth scientists in this temporary display, co-curated by two Earth Sciences students.

How many women Earth scientists can you name? With a focus on the University of Cambridge, Breaking New Ground is a celebration of women in Earth Sciences.
The display includes trailblazing, but historically overlooked early Earth scientists, perspectives from women who are currently researching, teaching, working or studying in the university's Department of Earth Sciences, and two local young people who share their passion for Geology.
This exhibition was co-curated by two Earth Sciences students at the university.
