Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences

*Please note there is currently no lift access to the Museum, we are working with engineers to resolve the ongoing issues and apologise for the inconvenience*

The Sedgwick Museum is housed in a beautiful historic building, but access to the Museum is not easy for everyone. The Museum is located on the first floor, with lift access that is not yet suitable for everyone. We are working to improve access for all visitors, and in the meantime we are always willing to help visitors with access requirements. If possible, please contact us in advance of your visit and we will be happy to make arrangements where possible to accommodate you. Access details can also be found on the AccessAble website.

Getting to the Museum

The Museum is located on the Downing Site of the University of Cambridge. The site is accessed through an archway from Downing Street, the Museum is signposted from the street. Once through the archway visitors should turn left and look for the sweeping stone staircase above the main entrance to the Department of Earth Sciences.

Parking information

For visitors with restricted mobility, we recommend the Grand Arcade carpark which has blue badge spaces and is located directly opposite the Museum accessible from Corn Exchange Street via Downing Street.

Getting into the Museum

The Museum’s main entrance is located at the top of a stone staircase above the entrance to the Department of Earth Sciences on Downing Site.

For visitors with restricted mobility there is a lift located within the Department of Earth Sciences which can be used to access the Museum. If possible, visitors should let the Museum know in advance if they wish to use the lift, by phoning or emailing the Museum before their visit. A member of staff will then assist you when you arrive.

There is a ramp leading to the door located beneath Museum staircase. The lift is not suitable for large buggies or large wheelchairs (the lift floor measures 105cm wide by 80cm deep, but the door is only 69cm wide). If your wheelchair or scooter will not fit in the lift, there is a folding wheelchair available that you can borrow within the Museum.  You must be able self-transfer or be accompanied by someone who can assist you.

Inside the Museum

Platform lifts enable access between the split levels of the gallery. Instructions and a key to operate these lifts are available from the front desk. Please ask for further assistance if required. Seating is provided throughout the galleries.

Further information on toilets, parking (including disabled parking), visual and hearing impairments can be found on the University of Cambridge Disability webpages.

Toilets

There is a toilet available in the Museum. Public toilets are available only five minutes walk away in the Lion Yard shopping centre where there is also a Changing Spaces toilet (Cambridge Shopmobility). https://www.changing-places.org/

Baby Changing

There are baby changing facilities in both the Museum toilet and the Department of Earth Sciences accessible toilet.
