Volunteering

Are you interested in Earth sciences? Love museums and want to get involved? Or maybe you are looking to build your CV, be part of a team and get to know more people. Volunteering might be for you! We have regular opportunities for volunteering at the Museum throughout the year - when roles are available, all the details can be found here.

Work Experience

The Museum aims to provide targeted opportunities for the local community and we actively participate in annual work experience initiatives as part of the University Cambridge Museums group who work with specific partner schools. 

In addition, the Museum aims to offer up to four year ten work experience placements specifically for neurodiverse students. Direct applications are welcome from October 2026. Students should apply directly by sending in their application in whichever format they feel most comfortable with (email, art, video - you decide!), explaining or showing us why they would like to do work experience at the Sedgwick Museum. Applications can be emailed to: sedgwickmuseum@esc.cam.ac.uk with the subject line 'Year ten work experience 2027'.

We don't currently offer 16+ work experience but we welcome those aged 16+ to consider volunteering at the Sedgwick Museum or other UCMs as an alternative way to get involved.

Students and Studying

The Museum is used regularly for teaching and hosts student projects. We offer annual summer placements for University of Cambridge Department of Earth Sciences students funded by the Friends of the Sedgwick Museum and opportunities for Department students to develop skills in public engagement. Further information about studying in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Cambridge and how the Museum works with students can be found here.
